Historical Notes:
Mesembria, situated in Thrace along the Black Sea coast at the foot of Mount Haemus, was founded by Dorian colonists from Megara in the 6th century BC. A strategic maritime center, it navigated the influences of Greek, Persian, and Roman powers. Mesembria thrived through trade and agriculture, becoming a prosperous city. It weathered invasions, including by the Scythians and the Thracians. During the Hellenistic period, it aligned with the Macedonian Empire and later became part of the Roman province of Moesia. Today, the modern town of Nesebar, Bulgaria, stands on the site of ancient Mesembria, and is designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
