Historical Notes:
Tabaristan was a mountainous region in northern Iran ranging across the southern coast of the Caspian sea. It was an important center of silk production and located along a stretch of the historical Silk Road that stretched from China to Constantinople. During the Islamic era that followed the fall of the Sasanian Empire, Tabaristan would come under the control of governors of the Abbasid Caliphate. The silver hemidrachms that they struck for use in commerce closely copied the design of Sasanian coinage.
