Historical Notes:
Akanthos was a port city in ancient Macedon. It was founded in the 7th century BC by colonists from Andros and Chalkidike, and became one of the most important cities in the region. As part of the Athenian Alliance of Greek cities after the Greco-Persian wars, it was recorded as having paid a tribute of three talents. During the Peloponnesian War (431-404 BC), the Akanthians turned against Athens and sided with the Spartans, possibly because the Spartans had threatened to burn their lucrative vineyards.
