OBVERSE: DIVA FAVSTINA, draped bust right, hair elaborately waved and coiled in bands across head and drawn up at back and piled in a round coil on top.

REVERSE: AVGVSTA, Ceres standing left holding up short torch in her right hand and corn-ears down in her left hand; S-C in fields.


Grade/Notes:

Fine. Dark green patina. Light roughness.


Historical Notes:
Faustina I was a niece of Sabina, wife of Emperor Hadrian.   She was made empress when her husband, Antoninus Pius, ascended to the throne in AD 138, but died a mere two years later.  Grieving deeply for her, Pius had Faustina deified and struck an extensive series of coinage in her name throughout his reign.
