Historical Notes:
Neapolis, present day Naples, was one of the wealthiest and most important Greek colonies in Magna Graecia. During the Second Punic War (218-201 BC), the city proved to be a staunch ally of the Roman Republic against the Carthaginian invaders, and its fortified walls repelled Hannibal's army, forcing him to retreat without being able to capture it . When it came under the control of the Romans, Neapolis continued to be a thriving and bustling city, retaining the Greek culture for which it was famous, even as Roman style villas, aqueducts, and baths were added to it. Roman emperors such as Claudius and Tiberius had holiday homes in Neapolis, and Nero was said to have once performed in its theatre for six continuous days.
